• Web site design - this is a self paced beginners introduction to building web pages by hand. It is from the PageTutor.com site, which is an excellent resource for those wishing to learn web design.
• Cascading Style Sheets - A really good, free online course by WestCiv on CSS, the new standard for web page layout. Westciv also offer other free online courses on web design, as well as fee-based online courses.
• Javascript - a beginners introduction to using Javascript to create more complex, interactive webpages. This tutorial comes from Ken Ward's site
• Learning To Program teaches beginners to be computer programmers, and is not restricted to any particular language, though it chiefly uses the Python language, a modern object oriented scripting language that is widely used on the internet.
• Thinking In Java by Bruce Eckel is widely regarded as one of the best books available on learning to program in Java. The entire text of the book is available online. You may also download the Zip Archive with Source Code of the book. We also mirror zip archive copies of all of Eckel's other books, all of which are available free in their electronic form, with source code. These titles are available: Thinking In Java, Thinking in C++, Thinking In Patterns, Thinking In Enterprise Java. This is a very high quality resource.
• How To Think Like A Computer Scientist - is another excellent tutorial for beginners that uses the Python language to teach all of the important fundamental concepts required for anyone to become a computer programmer.
• Dive Into Python is a Python tutorial for experienced programmers.

Free Software

It is possible for an organisation to set themselves up with a complete suite of high quality software for no financial cost at all. In this section, we provide links to the best free software available.

• Open Office is a professional Office Suite offering complete compatibility with Microsoft Office. Many people feel it is better than MS Office. It has a word processor, spreadsheet, database, illustrator and presentation package, and can publish in all major formats including doc, pdf, and flash. It is freeware!!
• Free Serif Software offers a range of high quality software icluding a Graphics Editor, Illustration Program, Desktop Publisher, 3D Designer and Web Page Creator. The quality is good enough for most offices to use as a functional replacement for the Abobe or Corel range of products.
• IrfanView is probably the fastest and most fully-featured image viewer and manager available for Windows. It is Freeware.
• Crimson Editor is a professional level text editor - an excellent replacement for Notepad with a lot of powerful features for programming languages including HTML, Java, C/C++, Perl etc. Freeware.
• Web Dwarf is a free visual web page editor for Windows similar to Dreamweaver.
• HTML-Kit is more than just a web page editor - its a full-featured, highly customizable development environment that can be used to create, edit, validate, preview and publish web pages and scripts. Freeware.
• The Gimp for Windows is the Windows version of the legendary Linux-based graphics editor that's as good as Photoshop! The Windows version is a little tricky to install, so you may want to download the special GIMP Installer for Windows from Jernej Simoncic's site.
• FTP Explorer is a free, easy to use but powerful FTP client.
• No Nags is an excellent site devoted to free software - all software listed is completely free and contains no nag screens. All software is tested and rated. A very reliable site.
